Switch on and Shop 2019

Ross Kemp delights the crowds at Switch on and Shop

At another triumphant event in Marlow last night (Thursday, 21st November), actor and broadcaster Ross Kemp switched on the town’s beautiful Christmas lights display in central Marlow to roars of delight from a huge crowd of supporters.

“I love living in Marlow,” Ross said. “It has everything - fantastic architecture, a great bridge, brilliant restaurants and bars. It’s a fantastic place to bring up children. But it’s the people who make Marlow what it is. People here are genuine - they mean it when they say good morning, and they mean it when they smile.” He talked about what he called: “The Marlow Smile,” — referring to all the people who smiled at him when he first visited, and finished by quoting the Christmas greetings of Tiny Tim in Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.

Crowds flocked to the event, where ‘snow’ was falling and coffee shops, bars and restaurants were filled with families enjoying the lights display.

Mayor Richard Scott said: “It’s true that the people of Marlow make this a wonderful place to live and work, and we’re proud to be part of such a brilliant community. Many thanks to our sponsors for their support, and to Ross for being a fantastic guest and starting our Christmas season in such style!”

A record number of sponsors, whose support ensures the lights are possible each year, attended a VIP reception at The Chequers Pub. Two special guests were Debbie Tonkinson and Susie Paterson from Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service. They were invited courtesy of Christmas lights sponsor Open Health, a supporter of the charity, which relies on local businesses to help run the service. The two met and chatted to Ross Kemp, who mentioned their charity in his speech. “This is a very special event,” Debbie Tomkinson said. “We’re so delighted to be here, and to meet Ross.”

Another sponsor, Simon Goldthorpe from Beaufort Financial said: “We’re proud to support Switch on and Shop and to help make Marlow’s Christmas lights display possible. The event gets better every year, and we’re delighted to be involved.”

Switch On and Shop 2018

The temperatures dipped, the snow fell and the crowds arrived in their thousands for this year’s Switch on and Shop with Edd China - TV presenter, mechanic, and inventor. Having arrived on his mobile sofa – the fastest sofa in the world - he successfully ‘flicked the switch’ for the town’s beautiful Christmas lights to roars of approval from the crowd.

“Over the past 20 years or so, I’ve seen Marlow change from a rather sleepy country town to this lively and interesting place with so much to offer,” Edd said. “And we’ve all done that, all of us here. By voting with our feet and our wallets we have made Marlow a place for residents and businesses to thrive, so keep doing that!”

Mayor Chris Funnell said: “Every year we get compliments for our stunning Christmas lights, and this year is no exception. I’d like to thank our generous sponsors for supporting us, and of course the marvellous Edd China for being such a brilliant guest. A fantastic start to the Christmas season in Marlow!”

Christmas Lights and Switch On and Shop

Marlow’s stunning Christmas lights are to be switched on this year by Edd China, TV presenter, mechanic, motor specialist and inventor. He will do the honours at the Switch on and Shop event on Thursday, 22nd November 2018 from the top of the double-decker bus in Marlow High Street.

But there will be another contender for public attention on the night and it will be parked right next to the bus – Edd’s three-seater sofa vehicle, known widely as the Casual Lofa. With the Guinness World Record for "fastest furniture" at a chart-topping 87mph, the Casual Lofa is the speediest sofa in the world. It sports a carefully hand-crafted Mars Bar handbrake, pizza-tray steering wheel, and neat little flower pots that serve as indicators. Under the bonnet - or at least under the cushions - is an A-series Mini engine.

‘Snow’ will fall as Marlow starts its Christmas countdown in style. To add to the authentic Christmas scene, there will be carols and festive music around the bus, which will be stationed outside the Chequers pub as usual.

Marlow’s Christmas lights display has become a popular draw for visitors, bringing many people into the town to shop and enjoy the coffee shops, bars and restaurants in and around the High Street.

The High Street will be closed from 5.00-7.30 pm. There will be ‘snow’ from 6.00 pm and the switch-on ceremony will take place at 6.30 pm.

A fantastic turnout for this year’s Switch on and Shop 2017

Marlow’s High Street was filled from end to end again this year for 2017’s Switch on and Shop, with Russell Brand, the comedian, writer, actor and presenter doing the honours to switch on the town’s beautiful lights display. Families flocked to the town centre to enjoy the snow, the carol singing, the Christmas displays and the ceremony from the top of a double-decker bus outside the Chequers pub.

The crowd was delighted by Russell’s very funny speech.  He said “I am thrilled to be here and I’m really, really excited and honoured. I know it was a controversial decision but I live here and I love it here.  For a moment I thought I was going to be as popular as the lorry driver who broke the bridge!  Every time I come across the bridge to Marlow, I feel like I’m coming back home. I really love it here.”

He mentioned many local businesses and restaurants, in particular Tom Kerridge.  He said Tom was an original, innovative person who has made him feel very welcome in Marlow.

Alluding to reports in national newspapers, he went on to say “Obviously I wouldn’t accept money to do something like this. I am doing this because like you, I’m proud to be part of this community.”  To hear his speech in full visit My Marlow Facebook Page

Russell then pushed the plunger, assisted by Mayor Jocelyn Towns, lighting up the beautiful Christmas lights and Christmas tree in the High Street.

Following the switch on and much to the delight of his fans, Russell spent quite some time talking to them and having selfies taken.

“Russell did us proud,” Mayor Jocelyn Towns said. “It was delightful to see him and his family enjoying such a great welcome from the people of Marlow, and his words about Marlow were heartwarming as well as very funny. We’re thrilled that he enjoys being part of this great community.”

Marlow Town Council has confirmed that comedian, writer, actor and presenter Russell Brand will illuminate Marlow’s stunning Christmas lights display at this year’s Switch on and Shop event on Thursday, November 23rd.

Snow machines will provide real snow from around 6.00 pm as carol singers entertain shoppers taking advantage of later opening times. Local celebrity Russell Brand will flick the switch from the top deck of a London bus outside The Chequers pub in the High Street, lighting up the Christmas tree on the Causeway as well as the many smaller trees and garlands of lights around the town.

Cllr. Jocelyn Towns, Marlow Town Mayor, said: “We’re delighted that Russell has agreed to help launch our Christmas season in Marlow this year. He’s an active participant in local events and we’re so happy he was able to fit Switch On and Shop into his busy schedule this year. ”

Shops will open late, and there will be special promotions, offers and Christmas displays throughout the town. Marlow FM and carol singers will be there to keep the Christmas spirit going.

The event starts at 6.00 pm, with the High Street closed to traffic with effect from 5.00 pm, with total closure of the High Street from 5.30pm - 7.30 pm for the switch-on ceremony, which will take place at approximately 6.30 pm.

Mary Berry draws thousands to the 2016 festive illuminations

People flocked into Marlow on Thursday evening 24th November, for the town's fourth annual Switch on and Shop event, where Mary Berry was the celebrity guest.  More than 6,000 people were estimated to have attended with crowds filling the High Street from top to bottom.

At 6.30pm Mary was escorted to the top of the double-decker bus in the High Street, where she was welcomed by Marlow FM's Tim Ashburner and Town Mayor Cllr Bob Johnson, to huge cheers from the crowds.  People hung from first and second storey windows along the High Street to wave as she joined in the countdown and pushed the plunger to illuminate the centre of Marlow.

"It's fantastic - I've never seen so many people in the centre of Marlow," said Mayor Bob Johnson.  "Mary is a fan of Marlow; she loves coming here to shop and to eat.  She certainly did us proud at the Switch On and we're so grateful to her for making the event extra special this year."

After the lights went on, Mary did a live interview with BBC London News, who had been in the town earlier in the day talking to retailers about the bridge closure and the news of its imminent opening.
