Snow was falling at Marlow’s Switch on and Shop event on November 24th this year, thanks to two snow machines at either end of the High Street. The snow started to fall as the town started its Christmas countdown in style with a visit from national treasure and British Bake Off star Mary Berry. To add to the authentic Christmas scene, there were be carols and songs from the Marlow Choral Society, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School Gospel Choir, the Songbirds Choir and the Tapestry Choir. See more info below.
Mary climbed to the top of the double-decker bus outside The Chequers pub in the High Street and turned on Marlow’s popular Christmas lights display, illuminating the town with twinkling Christmas trees and garlands of fairy lights.
Shops opened late, and there will be special promotions, offers and Christmas displays throughout the town. Marlow FM did a fantastic job supporting the event and kept the Christmas spirit going.
Thank you to our generous Christmas light sponsors:

- Marlow Choral Society is a mixed voice choir of over 90 strong. Based in the centre of the town, our members are attracted to MCS from the Marlow Community and surrounding towns in Berks, Bucks and Oxon. Our concerts are varied and, as well as choral music, may include orchestral pieces and instrumental soloists. This year’s Annual Carol Concert will take place at the Shelley Theatre, Court Garden on December 10th when the compère will be Johnny Ball.
- The Borlase Gospel Choir is an auditioned and student-led girls choir for years 10-13 from Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School. We perform regularly at community events and school concerts, as well as competing in competitions in the wider area. Every summer, two sixth formers are elected to run the choir for the next academic year; the conductors for 2016-17 are Lois Barber and Claire Murphy. Singing in this choir is a great pleasure for all involved and is also a brilliant way for us all to engage with the local community.
- Tapestry is an all-female chamber choir based in Berkshire, focused on exploring varied and innovative repertoire for higher voices. Recent concerts have included a performance of semi-improvised carols, a programme of French 19th and 20th century sacred music and a collaboration with lutenist Taro Takeuchi of Dowland lute songs. In rehearsal the group focuses on working both with and without a conductor, and allowing each singer to sing with a full-bodied, individual voice whilst singing and breathing as one. January 2017 marks the beginning of Tapestry's 5th anniversary, a year of celebration including a performance of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, a recording and a collaborative performance of David Lang's 'Love Fail'. www.tapestrychoir.org.uk
